Loft Convert

The phrase loft convert is often used in order to describe a loft conversion, this is a building amendment that often turns a loft into a useable room. In the majority of cases a loft will not be used as a room and it is likely to be used as a storage space. Traditionally a loft is either used for storage or it is dead space. A loft conversion therefore means that the dead space can be used a useable space and it also increases the amount of rooms within a house. In most cases a loft convert will mean turning the loft into a bedroom but there are many other options such as turning the loft into a home office. Whatever the room is turned into it is usually done on the basis of increasing the house capacity.

In the majority of cases a loft convert will not require planning permission and this is one of the main advantages; usually extending a home would mean getting permission from the relevant local authority. On this basis a house can therefore be extended for a reasonable price without any high fees. Small and regular size lofts will not need any kind of architecture plans as the room will just need the interior sorting.

One of the main additions that must be made during a loft conversion is room insulation. Lofts will usually be very cold and therefore wall insulation should be installed in order to keep in heat. In many cases radiators cannot be fitted and therefore fitted internal heaters are the best option. As well as installing the relevant heating methods another matter will be installing lighting and any other decorative necessities. A loft convert can relatively simple and can be usually be carried out by a home owner on their own.

In terms of turning the loft into a room the extent of the job will depend upon what is already installed. For example in most cases the loft convert will entail fitting plaster board to the walls and installing some form of proper ceiling. The main challenge during a loft convert is creating some form of access. In some cases this may include installing a proper staircase or spiral staircase. In other cases this may mean having stairs that are used only when the room wants to be accessed, for example a staircase that is moveable downwards and upward; this is usually a stainless steel staircase.
